Feline hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrinopathy in middle-aged to older cats and is caused by the unregulated overproduction of thyroid hormone, which is almost always related to a benign enlargement of one or both thyroid lobes. Hyperthyroidism can effect multiple organ systems, due to the increase in the cat's basal metabolic rate caused by the increased thyroid hormone levels.
